What Data Backup is all about?
Backup is how to data copy has been created on your system. It is important to do recovery in order to save your original data from corrupt or lost. Backup can also be used in order to recover a couple of older files copies that have been deleted from the system. There are a lot of organizations and businesses save their important data by using backup. It is one of the important data that you have to consider from the Business Continuity Strategy and Disaster Recovery Plan.
Importance of Data Backup
Data is very important that is why people and companies depend on this one. You may say without data you cannot run the business. If you do not have right backup, you will not survive your business.
A Backup Administrator must be designated by every company in order to deal with whole back strategy such as recovery point objectives (RPOs), recovery time objectives (RTOs), storage and network, infrastructure and schedule, backup scope, backup solutions and tools and many more. This is very important to come with backup solution and strategy for your company.
The main job description of Backup Administrator is to manage, define and understand what data to protect and back up. It is recommended for you to back up databases and files in order to reduce data loss risk. But there are also a couple of things that you have to back up such as configuration, applications and operating systems. For those of you who are using virtualization, you have to back up your management console and hosts, not only virtual machines. For your mobile devices, it is important for you to store the data to your CEO’s tablet than to store a data to couple of your servers.
Once you change the infrastructure, the backup scope should be revisited. Data all is used by new services, solutions and devices. When a backup solution is what you choose, you have to make sure all your data can be protected. Meanwhile, you probably need a couple of backup solutions because there are unprotected data. For instance, it is not enough for you to only backup VM’s if there is physical server that you put on data center. You have to do a couple of solutions to back up every system and device.
RPO and RTO
Once your backup scope has been decided, the next step that you have to do is to schedule a backup. When the data is constantly changed or disaster happened, all the data will be lost even from the latest backup. It is called Recovery Point Objective (RPO).
It means that you need more backups, more networks and computing resources for backup your data.
Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is another crucial variable. It is about how quick recovery can be done to get back to the normal operations after disaster happened. You have to recover quickly to minimize the losses or the company will lose money. Meanwhile, like RPO, you need technologies, networks, and storage to deal with RTO. It is more expensive than RPO.
